Louis Vuitton introduced the steamer bag in 1901 a little piece of luggage meant to be carried inside larger trunks. We reinvented it in 2015 as a comfortable, versatile, vintage inspired backpack for the next century and beyond.
Built to weather the elements and improve with age, this piece harks back to an era when seeing the world demanded a lot more than a credit card. Largely inspired by the durable character and clean lines of steamship luggage, this unlined heirloom features two padded straps linked to a single O-ring for weight distribution and brawny 18-oz. waxed canvas.
Our signature 100% full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather contrasts at the base and top reminiscent of the original material used for the historic leather mail bag.

This backpack is amazing but it is extremely difficult to get into. I suppose back in the day, when people had much more time, this would not have been a problem. Nowadays we are required to access things much more regularly. This could all be solved with a simple zipper across the back of the bag. Quick, easy access and you still get the amazing vintage look. Other than this fact the bag is awesome. The quality and craftsmanship is beautiful. Looking forward to my next delivery which is already on the way. Attention Mission Mercantile. I bought the light canvas and leather. It’s perfect. Already used it at a farmers market. Everyone wanted to know where I got it. The only trouble that I have had with it is the way the strap works to open and. Just a little time consuming. But then it’s the strap that helps give it that unique look. Wish there was a smaller everyday size.
Hey Jodi! If you need easier access, a little trick is to slip the strap through the last loop only (closest to the rear clasp) which will make it much quicker to open / close while maintaining security. Hope this little hack helps!
Also, thanks for your suggestion re: a smaller everyday size. We're definitely looking at that possibility!

This bag is super high quality and everything about it resembles and replicates the steamer bags from way back when. Love this bag and can’t wait till it gets beat up and used and really loved. This bag is Amazing!
This bag is so cool and it’s so classic and seems built really, really well. Finish is amazing. Not one stray thread needs to be trimmed (we called them Irish pennants in the Navy). Wife LOVES it. Side note: customer service is excellent according to her.
